Wedding Traditions That Carry On

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Jen Carter Weve all heard the expression: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Where do these traditional wedding phrases come from? Todays bride pays very littleif anyattention to such phrases. But for the longest time these wedding traditions were embraced by the sentimental and superstitious. Lets take a look at some of the traditions that may or may not be utilized by todays bride: Why wear a wedding ring? As far back as wedding were documented, a wedding ring has been in recorded. Many people believe that a wedding ring symbolized the first wedding tradition. The circular shape of a wedding ring symbolizes eternity. Like a circle, love is continuous and never-ending. Why does the ring rest on the third finger of the left hand? Its believed that the vein in that specific finger runs directly to the heart. Why should a bride wear white? Prior to 1840, a bride would wear her Sundays best to marry in. But after Queen Victoria wore a white gown to her wedding, white gowns were embraced by everyone. The simple white gown represented virginity, joy, and purity. Why does the bride where a wedding veil? Lets go back in time. People were very superstitious and they believed that a bride wore a veil to protect her from evil spirits on her wedding day. Now the white veils is seen as a symbol of modesty. Why does the bride carry flowers? Once again, this was a wedding tradition that was used to ward off evil spirits. Flowers and herbs were believed to play an important role in attracting good things instead of negativity. Today flowers are used to add a touch of elegance. If they carry any symbolism, its that of purity, romance, and fertility. Where did the expression: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue come from? Ah, this one has everything to do with symbolism. something old from a friend or relative who has been married for a long time should be carried by the bride. This item is believed to hold the power to insure a lasting marriage. The bride should also carry something new into her new life with her. Something borrowed represents borrowed happiness. The color blue, which was associated with modesty, was embraced when the line something blue was written. Why do they give the bride away? Back in olden times, a man literally gave his daughter away in an arranged marriage. Today the phrase remains as the parents of the bride are give their consent and love. Why is a runner used in the aisle? The runner symbolizes a path. White runners are usually used to represent a clean (or pure) path to happiness. Are Your Workouts Designed to Make You Fail?

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Matt Elder It amazes me when I look at the way people work out. Or the way professionals tell people to work out. The more I look at how the public tries to lose fat, the more I realize a huge reason we are obese. We arent working out right. True story: I was talking to a potential client who wanted to lose weight. She showed me her workout routine that a trainer made for her and I was shocked and appalled. Shocked she kept lifting like that and appalled that a personal trainer actually TOLD her to life like that. She was leg pressing 455 pounds! She was bench pressing 100 pounds! She was doing many workouts that a powerlifter would do. These workouts certainly werent meant for a 31-year-old math teacher looking to lose a few pounds and tone up. Shortly after changing her workout, she saw great results. I wont bother giving away the numbers (I think people are too concerned with weight loss by numbers instead of the mirror but Ill give you her exact quote to me. I can see my abs for the first time since I was a junior in college Do the math. She is 31, and she was 20 when she was a junior in college. So altering her workouts made her look better than she has in 11 years. OK, so what did she do? She stopped lifting like a powerlifter! No more legs day and shoulder day. She just worked out with me. We focused on full body workouts specifically designed to challenge her balance, agility, strength and stamina. Body builders lift one muscle group at a time. And they gain strength, size and power. Myla? She lost weight, gained strength and saw definition in her abs for the first time in over a decade. Concentrate on basic movements first that are actual functional. Use free weights if you can, never machines. By standing and doing an exercise you are utilizing many more muscles than if you are sitting at a machine. Rest less and workout more. Those powerlifters need to rest two minutes in between sets. You dont! Do circuit training (a handful of exercises back to back to back with little or no rest between). This will speed up your workout and help you burn more calories. So when you are making your workout, think about your goals. Many people just go by what they read in Glamour or Mens Health. Are you lifting like a powerlifter, or someone looking to lose a few pounds? Matt Elder is a personal trainer and fitness expert in the Boston area. We’re on our Honeymoon - but not Alone

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Vlady Peters When Zsa Zsa Gabor she of the I have never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back fame was planning her ninth honeymoon, she did have some problems. Darling, he would say, how about Hotel La Fonda, at Santa Fe? It is so romantic, historical and utterly charming.’ But, darleenk, she would reply, Im sure I was there with husband number one, or number two, or anyway, darleenk, with either one or the other. What about a trip on Venice Simplon Orient Express, then? Its unbelievably luxurious. Everyone does that Express theenk, darleenk. You mean, youve done it, darling. I told you everyone does it. Though only much married couples would truly appreciate this dilemma, it is to their credit that they are getting a handle on it. Time was when a divorce was a kiss of death to any civilized communication ever after between the two partners. They would refuse to attend the same party, or the same wedding, or the same anything. If by some accident they saw each other walking down the same street, they would either cross to the other side, or spit in each others eye. That was fine when people were just discovering divorce. Now, with couples appearing at court hearings as frequently as at their favourite restaurants, holding grudges is just too much of a chore. Considering that some marriages last six hours, and some couple of days, it probably gets difficult to distinguish between the various spouses anyway. To their credit, couples are becoming quite reconciled to their situations. After all, they may have had children from that marriage, or inherited a couple from another marriage, so animosity for the rest of your life is simply not an option. The last wedding I attended, not only was the ex wife and her children seated prominently in the front row, apparently when it came to the honeymoon itself, it comprised husband and wife, his ex wife, and their four children. After all, they reasoned, the kids would never get another such opportunity to see the Great Pyramid of Giza, and they were just at that age when theyd really appreciate the trip. Times they certainly are a changing. Vlady Peters is an Australian Civil Marriage Celebrant authorised to perform marriages in Australia. The Case Of Psychrotrohic Bacteria

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Leon Van Der Westhuizen Psychrotrophic bacteria seem to be becoming the newest thorn inthe side of the dairy industry. Scary bit is that we are helpingthem along. “How?” do you ask? Because of economic factors the pre-processing time of raw milkhas been extended to an average of 4 days. This allows ampletime for psychrotrophic, proteolytic bacteria to grow, and formheat stable enzymes. Although the psychrotrophic bacteria areeasily killed off by normal pasteurization temperatures, theformed enzymes can survive UHT processes. This causes multiple problems and we here at Elsenburg Dairy Labhave especially seen those problems on products like cottagecheese and UHT milk, more so over the past few years. This is agroup of bacteria that actually loves the cold chain, as ithelps them outwit, outlast and outperform their competition.Nowadays psychotropic bacteria predominate in raw milk in thecold chain, especially Pseudomonas spp. So much so that when the same milk is plated out and incubatedat 7 C and at 30 C(as in Total Plate Count), the psychotropicgrowth will overtake the mesophilic growth, causingpsychrotrophic counts to be higher than total plate counts. I don’t think the methods of analysis are of much importance inthis article, because there are many, ranging frommicrobial(determining the bacteria) and biochemical(determiningthe formed enzyme). Qualitative tests are of no use as we wantto be able to enumerate the psychrotrophic bacteria. The main concern I have is to raise awareness of a fast growingproblem, that will only become more so in the future. Possible solutions are the following: 1) Ask your lab to do a monthly psychrotrophic count on allfarmers. This will identify your high risk milk supply. 2) Thermising the milk to 68 C before cooling on the farm. Thiswould have to be done with a plate heat exchanger, but would beeconomical at this stage, because the milk is already at bodytemperature(37 C) and the treated milk can run against theincoming milk to heat it and to be cooled down itself. An icebank would also be needed to finish the cooling process. Thethermising process would obviously increase the overall qualityof the milk as well, without influencing heat stability to alarge degree. 3) Very rapid cooling on the farm to 2 C, instead of the usual4 C and keeping it there until processing. 4) Using a pre-cooler at the factory to cool the milk downquickly from the 5-7 C that it arrives at, to 2 C. The Awful Truth About Television: TV Watching Can Become An Addiction

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Katherine Westphal Push a button to feel relaxed When you turn on the TV, you become relaxed almost instantaneously. The quickness of the relaxation can condition you to associate TV with relaxation. As long as you are watching TV, you will stay relaxed. Scientific American researchers, Kubey and Csikszentmihalyi, also found that this feeling of relaxation ends as soon as the TV is turned OFF, reinforcing the TV=relaxation association. They compare it to a drug in terms of its relaxation effect. TV is like a tranquilizing drug With drugs, the faster a drug leaves the body, the more addictive it is. “A tranquilizer that leaves the body rapidly is much more likely to cause dependence than one that leaves the body slowly, precisely because the user is more aware that the drug’s effects are wearing off. Similarly, if viewers sense that they will feel less relaxed if they turn off the TV, they may be more likely to leave it on. This can grow into a dependency over time, as viewers increasingly turn to the television screen in order to relax. Side effects of TV TV puts your brain into a passive, suggestible, alpha brain wave state. The left side of the brain largely shuts down and critical thinking diminishes. Viewers feel drained and have difficulty focusing. These side effects continue after the viewer turns the TV off. Therefore, when you click the ON button on your TV, you may soon feel relaxed, but you will also feel the side effects of passivity, suggestibility, and difficulty concentrating. When you turn off the TV you will stop feeling pleasantly relaxed, and you will still experience the negative side effects. This is a formula for an addiction. TV withdrawal symptoms Another sign that TV is addictive is that people often feel withdrawal symptoms when they try to go for long periods without watching TV. Many viewers may feel anxious for a time as they try to adjust to living without TVs relaxing effects. According to Charles Winick, who analyzed numerous studies of people trying to give up TV, “The first three or four days for most persons were the worst, even in many homes where viewing was minimal and where there were other ongoing activities. In over half of all the households, during these first few days of loss, the regular routines were disrupted, family members had difficulties in dealing with the newly available time, anxiety and aggressions were expressed…. People living alone tended to be bored and irritated.” Are you addicted to TV? An addiction can make it difficult to control TV watching. Naturally, some people are more susceptible to the addictive effects of TV than others are. Are you addicted to TV? Can you and your family turn off the TV for three days and leave it off? STD’s, Cardiomyopathy and Wilt Chamberlain

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gabe_Mirkin,_M.D.] Gabe Mirkin, M.D. He was the greatest basketball player and possibly the greatest athlete who ever lived. The 63-year-old Wilt Chamberlain was reported to have died of a heart attack, but that tells you nothing. You are supposed to ask why the worlds greatest athlete would die of a heart attack? He was born in 1936, in Philadelphia. He was 6-11 when he entered Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School, led them to three public school championships and two all-city titles, Chamberlain became one of the most recruited players ever with more than 200 colleges interested, scored more than 100 points in a single National Basketball Association game and averaged more than 30 points a game throughout his professional career. However, when he was in high school, he was the best high school quarter miler in the United States and ran under 48 second. He also high jumped over 6 feet, five inches and was the best shot putter in Pennsylvania. He remained active after his NBA career and was considered an outstanding volleyball player. He also ran in the Honolulu marathon and competed in a 50-mile race in Canada. Long after his career ended, Chamberlain made news by claiming in an autobiography that he had had sex with 20,000 women. Lets see how good you are in diagnosing disease. Chamberlains health first became an issue in the 1960s, when a former coach told the news media that the star player might have had a heart attack before the 1964 season. But Chamberlain denied it. In 1992, when Chamberlain gathered with former teammates for a halftime ceremony marking the anniversary of their 1971-72 NBA championship, he had to leave early because he was having trouble breathing. He was admitted to a hospital and found to have an irregular heart beat. He was released from the hospital after three days wearing a heart monitoring device. During his last years, he was diagnosed as having cardiomyopathy which means that his heart was too weak to pump blood through his body and he lost 50 pounds in the months prior to his death. There are three causes of a weak heart muscle. Lack of nutrients, blocked arteries, and infection. You can suffer from a nutritional deficiency such as beriberi caused by lack of the vitamin thiamine or pellagra caused by lack of the vitamin niacin. This is almost impossible today in North America. The second possible cause of a failing heart is blocked arteries caused by arteriosclerosis and he did not have a very high cholesterol and he did not have arteriosclerosis. The third possibility is an infection in his heart caused by such bacteria as chlamydia and mycoplasma. The fact that he lost 50 pounds and was unable to go anywhere in the last months of his life point to a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, thats heart muscle damage, caused by infection with chlamydia or mycoplasma, from making love to considerably less than the 20,000 women that he claimed. That comes to 500 women per year, or 10 differnt women per week for 40 years, which would make the worlds greatest athlete, the most prolific lover of all time. Cardiomyopathy is often caused by chlamydia. Chamberlain’s body was cremated, so we will never know for sure how he died. If Medicine And Dental Medicine Are So Amazing, Why Have We So Much Illness? Are We Asleep?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Christie] Philip Christie Why do we spend so much and get so little? Medicine in general accounts for massive spending in the developed world. We applaud how advanced medicine has become. We read articles about medical miracles and content ourselves that we are doing really well. Yet we are building and needing to build more and more and bigger and bigger hospitals. There are not enough beds in our hospitals to accommodate the number of sick people. Our waiting lists are an embarrassment. It seems not to occur to us that these are not the signs great advancement and wonderful progress in medicine. Increasing numbers of people and illness and a shortage of beds despite the bigger hospitals is a sign of the failure of medical science to bring us the health that it promises to bring. When medical science can boast that the need for beds for sick people is diminishing and that new hospitals are no longer needed, they will then be reporting progress and medical miracles. People are waking up to this more and more and they are unhappy about the way things are. They see the need for change and want a new direction. People need a new perspective on medicine. They need a new perspective on dental medicine, a new perspective on the mouth and dental disease. They have been trying so hard to get it right and the are tired and weary. They are weary of listening to scientists tell them what is wrong and how to fix it. They are weary of putting so much in but not getting so much out. If we know so much, how did this happen? One man that I saw recently had brushed his teeth so long and so hard that they were literally destroyed by his own efforts at saving them. The gums were 70% destroyed and the teeth were worn through past their centres and waving in the breeze. They were literally waving him good-bye. What had happened to this diligent man, who had never missed a six-monthly check-up and brushed his teeth at least four times a day? He was on the brink of losing all his teeth as a direct result of his massive effort all his life to ensure that he would not lose his teeth. Emotionally he was distraught and who could blame him. He had done all he was told to do and more. He had never missed a day in his diligent efforts and now, there was nothing I could do for him to save his teeth. He did not know whether to shout in anger or cry in despair. I looked into his eyes and my heart went out to him. I too felt like crying. The sense of utter disappointment, despair and frustration was so palpable. I did not know what to say to him. We sat in silence for what seemed like twenty minutes but was probably more like twenty seconds. I always did my very best…, he broke the silence in the most dejected tones. I knew in my heart that this was the absolute truth. That was what made it all the more upsetting. I genuinely felt the beginning of tears. I had no words. Hypnotized by scientific arrogance? I wanted to apologise to him for the nonsense of the dental health advice he had listened to and followed to the letter and beyond. I was sure that had he not taken the dentists advice he might have saved his teeth. We had let him down so badly and now it was too late to modify or refine the advice or the instructions. He had looked up to and respected the wisdom and authority of dental medical science, followed it to the letter and now he was without hope of reprieve. We really should level with people and let them know that we are not the absolute authority that they think we are, or expect us to be I thought to myself. People have too much faith in us and too little in their own commonsense and wisdom. I knew that if were to tell this very intelligent man that all he had to do to maintain his car in good mechanical order was to wash it two to four times a day, with a professional cleaning every six months, he would never believe me. He would immediately intuit that while his car might be very clean using this practice, he could not count on the engine being maintained in this way and it would not protect him from his own driving or from the damage of a crash or other accidental damage. Yet he could believe it of his dental health without question. After all the dental experts said that it was so! This is a perspective and a teaching that is so limited as to be of little value. In fact we have just seen that when people take it on as the ultimate recipe for dental health, it can cause the complete demise of the tissues by being brought the extreme. People need a new perspective. They need to understand much about the nature of their dis-ease and its origin. The person needs to come to a place where they can be a full partner with their dental (and medical and other) therapist/s. They need to know what we know but also what we dont know and to be fully involved in decisions about treatment and management. If this true story is not a call to awake, what is? My name is Philip Christie. I qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Trinity College, Dublin (Ireland) in 1980 and completed a Masters Programme in Dental Science, again at Trinity College Dublin, by research in 1995. I have been working full time in dental care either in general practice or specialist practice since qualification. My main interest is and always has been prevention. My real qualification is 23 years experience in dealing with real people and their problems face to face, as a clinical practitioner. I am the author of Something To Chew On: A Mouth Map To Health. Tips for Selecting Wedding Musicians

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

By Gail Leino Planning a wedding celebration can be crazy, fun, and overwhelming all at once! So many decisions, so little time. Menu? Decorations? Flowers? Wedding Invitations? Bridal Showers? Music? Lets focus on the music and share suggestions to ensure a successful wedding celebration. Things happen so just keep cool and let the wedding professionals help you by virtue of their expertise! If you are a do it yourselfer, allow extra time for the learning curve. Just relax if stuff goes wrong like the ring bearer forgetting the ring up on the 16th floor of the hotel room or the ceremony starting 35 minutes late because Uncle Bob took a wrong turn driving to the church. Always trust a professional. Remember: You are planning one wedding. Professional help plan thousands. Many people are looking for value today and may believe that because Aunt Bertha plays the piano, she’d be perfect as your cocktail pianist. Aunt Bertha may know “Love Me Tender” ~ but do you want to hear it over and over? Don’t disappoint your guests or yourself by cutting corners? If she wants to play as her gift to you, invite her to play one or two songs. Let Aunt Bertha be a guest. Leave the music to the professional who has a wide repertoire for everyone. They are able to take requests, play polished, professional arrangements ~ and do it all while smiling and carrying on a conversation without taking their hands off the keys. For a beautiful, elegant, and classy wedding ceremony and reception use “live” music. Keep the CDs in the car. If you are absolutely on the tightest budget ~ you can hire a solo musician for what two dinner entrees or a lovely flower arrangement would cost. Do not cut corners with your ambience. Music sets the tone for your day. Your guests WILL notice. Keep this thought in mind for your wedding showers, rehearsal dinners, and your post nuptial champagne brunches. Trust your friends for referrals that they have dealt with for their special occasions. If you don’t know of anyone, the facility where you are planning your event usually has a list of preferred Musicians for specializing in Wedding Ceremonies, Receptions, and Corporate Events. Ask your friend and the venue about Bands, Orchestras, DJ’s, Florists, Photographers, and Caterers. Just ask a Catering Coordinator for their list of Professional Musicians; this lists of recommended vendors most likely did not PAY to be listed! Anyone can get listed in a phone book or a wedding magazine for a fee. Recommendations cost nothing but are tremendously valuable resources. Brides planning Catholic wedding ceremonies need to consult with the Musical Director of their local churches before selecting musicians. It is common practice for the church to REQUIRE you utilize their “in house” musicians and will not allow you to bring in “outside” vendors. Remember when planning your wedding, always trust a professional with a proven reputation. Enjoy your special day! Finding A Basic Diet That Works For You

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Max Adams There are many different kinds of diets, each with a specific goal. When considering a basic diet for weight loss, you will find that there are a variety of theories about what you should and should not eat. Generally, diets fall into four basic categories: low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein and vegetarian. There are other diets, of course, but these four are the most popular among people who are dieting to lose weight. Low fat diets involve reducing fat intake to reduce calories. There are more than twice as many calories per gram in fat than there are in carbohydrates or protein, so a low fat diet is an easy way to cut calories and reduce weight. Also, since high fat diets are linked to many diseases, a low fat diet has value beyond weight loss. In recent years, people who have had little or no success losing weight on low fat diets have turned to low carbohydrate and high protein versions of a basic diet. Low carbohydrate diets are based on the idea that eating an excess amount of carbohydrate-rich foods (particularly refined carbohydrates and baked goods) is a major cause of obesity. One of the basic ideas here is to eliminate the blood sugar swings caused by carbohydrates. This, in turn, will reduce hunger. Closely related to low carbohydrate diets are high protein diets. When people reduce their intake of carbohydrates, they tend to increase their intake of proteins. High protein diets are especially popular among athletes because protein intake is associated with building muscle mass. Finally, vegetarian diets are popular among people who want to learn weight. As a basic diet, a vegetarian diet tends to be lower in fat, higher in healthy complex carbohydrates and packed with nutrient-rich foods. Studies show that, as a group, vegetarians tend to weight less than non-vegetarians, so emphasizing vegetarian meals as a basic diet plan may make losing weight easier. The Weight Loss Benefit of Green Tea

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Julie Health For 4,000 years, Asians have regarded green tea as more than just a beverage. It was used as herbal medicine and treatment for everything from headaches to depressions and even to weight loss. Researches have been conducted over the last few years to identify what compound present in green tea makes it a potent health drink. The scientists have found that the tea contains several antioxidants which are responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits, including a weight loss benefit. A research study by American and Swiss scientists on the weight loss benefits of green tea was concluded and the results of which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Urology. During the course of their study, they have found that green tea contains certain compounds that contribute to losing weight. Lead researcher, D. Abdul Dulloo said in a press release that there are only two ways to achieve weight loss - either reduce energy intake or increase energy expenditure. Green tea it seems, has compounds that can increase the body’s normal metabolism rate which is where it gets its weight loss benefit. At the University of Geneva, where the study was conducted, Dr. Dulloo and his colleagues experimented on ten healthy young men. They theorized that the main contributor to green tea’s helping remove those extra pounds is its caffeine content. To test this hypothesis they placed the study’s participants on a typical “Western” diet which is about forty percent fat, forty-seven percent carbohydrates, and thirteen percent protein. Thrice everyday, the researchers measured their subjects’ energy expenditure (the measurement used in determining the number of calories burned in 24 hours) and monitored their respiration quotient to find out how well they utilized their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. When they interpreted the data they collected, they found out that the men receiving regular dosages of green tea extract showed a significant increase in their 24-hour energy expenditure and a reduction in their respiration quotient (which means that more fat is burned, thereby achieving maximum weight loss). On the other hand, those men who were only given caffeine or placebo with every meal showed only minimal increases in their metabolism rates.
