The Roof Garden

By Kadence Buchanan After a small adventure I had to go through with my apartment building tenants who needed some convincing, I was allowed to begin working on a roof garden at which I imagined myself spending time relaxing under the sun while conversing with friends. But since the space I was allowed to use from the roof top was not as big as the whole roof itself, I had to adjust my plans to the already permanent constructions and always come up with new ideas as I was moving along. My anxiety was reduced when I my research revealed that humans have been growing plants atop of structures since antiquity. In addition to the decorative benefit, my roof plantings would provide temperature control, architectural enhancement and recreational opportunities. The new residential garden I was creating was based on plantations placed in beautiful pots and wooden containers which I bought for a fraction of their original cost at yard sales and clearances. After walking through parks and gardening supply stores, I decided on the colors the height and the overall appearance of the plants that would go inside the pots. Specifically, I began by placing the biggest plants I bought closer to the existing walls and continued by scattering my medium-sized plants close to the ends of the available open area and placing the smaller ones in the front or at their sides. This created a balanced effect and the still available space gave the impression that the plants did not used up any space, but on the contrary enhanced the overall look and feel of the apartment building’s terrace. When all the plants and flowers were in place, I installed the watering system that would provide the necessary nutrients to my houseplants helping them to grow and continue being healthy. Soil fertilizers and plated for the pots were added last and then the fun part of decorating the whole roof garden area started. I began by placing some necessary, but fine furniture to live-up the place. A wooden long table was placed across the only wall and between two small trees at its right and left corners. In front and behind the table, two wooden benches completed the scene, while white, green and blue candles were placed in specially designed glass vases for them to provide light without the wind blowing them off. A wide off-white canvas was hanged above the table at a certain height in order to provide some shadow and keep the temperature at lower levels during summer time. The cloth was decorated with shells and small colored stones which I stitched from its inner side and on the wall behind the table I hanged glass bottles of different shapes and sizes, which I filled up with colored sand, bluish small stones and white shells. Some of the glass containers contained candles, which when they were lit created an amazing effect with the rest of the glass bottles against the wall. Chairs and smaller tables that folded in half were also placed in the roof garden, while torches were put at the two open corners of the roof garden to illuminate the outcome at night time. Throughout my career I have attended many and conducted many more, and the truth is whether you are the candidate or the interviewer, job interviews are challenging and confronting and difficult but you can not only survive but learn to be a masterful interviewee by developing an understanding of what it is the interviewer needs to see and learning to conduct yourself with clarity and confidence. Be prepared. Sounds obvious, right? Youd be surprised how many people dont get this part right. Formulate your responses using the STAR technique when responding to questions. Most interviewers use a competency-based interview technique. Many believe your past behaviour will predict your future behaviour so they ask questions to help them to understand what your past behaviours have been. Interviewers want specific examples of situations you have been involved in not hypothetical answers. Be positive. Use positive, lively language. Act as though you already have the role use phrases such as, When I am in the role, When I start the job and When I begin working with you. Take notes. Let the interviewer know that you will be writing down points as you discuss the role. This will help you to remember details after you leave and it gives you something to do that stops your hands from fidgeting and it can help to settle the nerves a little too. But, make sure you use a good pen, dont use a cheap pen for your job interviews. If you cant afford a nice one, borrow one. It is important to give a good impression and these small details can make an impact. Know the content of your resume well. The interviewer is likely to refer to something youve written in your resume make sure you know it intimately and can answer questions about all your past roles, responsibilities and achievements. Also, know the timeline of your employment history well; itll sound like youre trying to cover something up if you stumble over your own career chronology. Take additional copies of your resume with you one for yourself and another for your interviewer should they need it. White paper, black ink, staples in the left-hand corner is an ideal format for most roles leave the plastic folders and fussy presentation out. Ask questions. Ideally an interview is an exchange you are getting to know the people and the organisation you might be working with as much as they are getting to know you. Enough said. However, unless the prospect of a really long job search excites you, you have to get out there and connect with people who dont know you but who could benefit from your expertise. Below are a bakers dozen tips to help you crack the connection code. 1. Attend with a purpose in mind. Be choosy about the events you attend. Pick the ones that interest you most. It could be a ribbon cutting for a new business, a chamber of commerce mixer, SPCA benefit, or pink slip party. 2. Take a friend. Make a game of it. Challenge each other to beat your stated goals with the winner treating for ice cream. 3. Plan ahead. Set a networking goal to talk with at least five people and collect business cards from three individuals in your industry, profession, or career of interest. 4. Split up. Devise a Plan of Action. First and foremost, get a strategytogether. Make a note of the specific projects youve undertakenand the results youve accomplished. Know the facts and be realistic in yourrequest. 2. Ask for an amount thats slightly higher than one you would behappy with. If you would be happy with a 5% raise, ask for one acouple of points above it. Remember, your boss shouldnt be the only one negotiating. Compare yourself to, or talk negatively about your coworkersor others in a position higher than you. You may think that thiswill put you in a positive light when it comes to a promotion ora raise, but to your boss, it shows that if you have a poorattitude toward your colleagues, youll keep the same poorattitude if you are promoted. Remember, be confident, professional and tactful. If the bosssays no or wants to think about it, open his mind to furtherconsideration by volunteering to do more at the office.
